The Therapist

Susan K. Mah, MFA, LCSW

Licensed for over 20 years, I have a bachelor's degree in sociology from American University, a master's in social work from Catholic University of America, and a master's in fine art photography from Academy of Art University.

I offer a straightforward approach to problem-solving with a solution-oriented focus. With expertise in depression, anxiety, and trauma, my goal is to get to the root of the problem instead of simply managing symptoms.

In addition to being a therapist, I am also a photographer and foodie who enjoys my dogs, nature, travel, and the arts.

My philosophy

Living in the Gray

Life is rarely black and white. We often think in extremes—good or bad, success or failure, strong or broken. But healing and living happen in the gray. My philosophy is built on helping you move beyond rigid, all-or-nothing thinking and into a space of flexibility and balance.

I believe that meaningful growth requires two things at once: the strength to challenge dysfunctional ways of being, and the softness to nurture you through the process. I will always keep your goals in mind and encourage you to do the hard work of change. But I will also meet you with empathy and help you build the life that you hope for and deserve.

Why I Practice This Way

I believe emotional growth requires commitment and action. Traditional therapy often assumes that sitting in a room talking once a week is the primary path toward healing, but I believe you don't just learn skills in therapy—you learn them by practicing them in the real world.

This is why I offer a variety of approaches for our work together, including an intensive cyclical model that alternates intensive therapy with structured independent practice to apply those skills in your daily life. Whether we are doing therapy to heal from the past or coaching to build forward momentum, we will work together in this process. My job is not to give you a set of suggestions, but to help you trust your inner voice and build a life that feels authentic and gratifying.
